The Movement Complexity Project
A dynamic toolbox for physical freedom, self-expression, discovery, and play.
September 28th - November 9th
We are thrilled to announce the next chapter of Mixed Movement Art School! The Movement Complexity Project is our new 6-week online course diving deeper into Dae and Leah’s favorite topics: improvisation, dance, floorwork, locomotion, creativity, flow, and more.
The variable we will be exploring in this program is COMPLEXITY. How do we identify and define simple fundamental building blocks of movement? Remember that “simple” does not always mean “easy.” Starting from our defined simple movement skills, we then practice how to increase our movement complexity. We must define so we can refine our movement.
Our practice structure is flexible and customizable. Using music as a metaphor with your body as your instrument, here is an overview of the areas of practice:
Tuning the instrument
Nervous system balancing and priming, Mixed Movement Arts foundational practices, intuitive warm-ups, finding stillness through movement
Practicing scales
Joint articulations, learning to perform waves and circles in different planes of movement.
Learning chords
Quadrupedal locomotion vocabulary, floorwork technique, intermediate option to explore soft acrobatics
Exploring quality, texture, rhythm
We isolate the body into 3 primary regions- spine, arms, legs-to develop more movement capacities and possibilities
Creating chord progressions
Integrating the techniques, combining vocabulary, learning sequences
Playing songs and improvising solos
Discovering and developing your own unique movement expression
Throughout the program, we will also be using movement as a vehicle for nervous system education and regulation.
You can think of this program as a “software upgrade” for your current operating system. This style of practicing movement from a generalist perspective has the potential to increase your performance and enjoyment of all of the activities you’re interested in or already love to do-whether that is dancing, hiking, martial arts, team sports, triathlons, circus, or playing with your kids.
As we build a more complex movement skillset, the natural “side effects” of this process often consist of improvements in strength, functional mobility, cardiovascular/metabolic conditioning, fluidity, physical intelligence, and resilience to stressors.
Dae and Leah have synthesized their extensive backgrounds with their latest research explorations to create a mixed-levels course. This means that everything is scalable with multiple progressions- we’ll start with the basics that are accessible for beginners, discuss practice strategies for those navigating injuries/chronic illness, and have plenty of material to challenge the more intermediate/advanced practitioners.
This 6-week course will include:
Opening workshop Saturday, September 28th from 1-2:30pm MST
Ongoing unlimited support via WhatsApp and email
12 live weekly one-hour zoom classes from September 28th - November 9th on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 12pm MST
Lifetime access to Zoom class recordings
Intermediate/advanced options
Personal feedback and support on improvisation/freestyle rounds
An opportunity to share your work at the end of the program on Nov 9th 1-3pm MST*
*While totally optional, we highly recommend sharing your work and being witnessed by the other people in this cohort. We’ll host a Zoom party on Nov 9th at which you can share a sample of what you’ve been working on during the program. You can participate live or by sharing a video recording of your movement.
Colorado Locals: while this is an online course, we are going to host in-person bonus practice sessions in Boulder & Denver.
